Compaq Named Energy Star 1996 PC Partner of the Year
by Environmental Protection Agency

Award Recognizes Compaq's Leadership in Environmentally Sound Products

HOUSTON, June 4, 1996 -- Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ) was named "PC Partner of the Year" today by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The award recognizes Compaq's outstanding efforts to advance environmental features in its products, promote the Energy Star program and offer Energy Star-compliant computer products.

"At Compaq, our goal is to provide leadership in all aspects of our business, including environmental design and manufacturing. This award recognizes our dedication to integrating sound environmental practices into all of our products and services," said Hans Gutsch, Senior Vice President, Human Resources and Environment, Compaq Computer Corporation. "Our ultimate objective is to develop the highest quality computer products and solutions with the smallest impact on the environment."

Compaq became a charter member of the EPA's Energy Star program in 1992 and announced the first Energy Star-labeled Compaq products at a White House event presided over by Vice President Al Gore in 1993. Compaq has won several Energy Star awards, including "Highest Percentage of Sales" and "Most User Friendly Power Management Interface" in 1994.

"The EPA is proud to honor Compaq for exemplary environmental leadership," said Kathleen Hogan, Director of the Atmospheric Pollution Prevention Division (APPD) of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. "Compaq has done an outstanding job in promoting the Energy Star program and in bringing environmentally sound products to market."

A key component of Compaq's environmental initiatives is the Design For Environment (DFE) program. Compaq established DFE to integrate environmental parameters into the development of its products. The DFE program includes elements such as energy usage, recyclability of materials, use of recycled materials, ease of disassembly and ease of recycling. This enables Compaq to reduce the environmental impact at every stage of product life.

Compaq's dedication to the Energy Star program has yielded some significant milestones:

In addition, during 1995 and 1996, the company introduced a number of Compaq PCs that are high-performance, energy-efficient, and easy to service, upgrade and eventually recycle. Compaq also expanded the environmental requirements of its suppliers and conducted comprehensive environmental, health, safety and security audits on its worldwide operations.
